On May 14, 2025, former U.S. President Donald Trump announced a series of significant agreements with Qatar during his visit to Doha. The Boeing deal, encompassing defense and aviation sectors, aim to bolster economic ties and strategic partnerships between the two nations.
Major Boeing Aircraft Deal
A centerpiece of the agreements is Qatar Airways’ commitment to purchase up to 210 Boeing aircraft, including 130 787 Dreamliners and 30 777-9s, with options for 50 more. Valued at approximately $96 billion, this deal represents Boeing’s largest-ever widebody and 787 order. It is expected to support around 154,000 U.S. jobs annually and over 1 million throughout the deal’s production.
Defense Agreements
In addition to the aviation deal, Qatar has agreed to purchase 36 Boeing-made F-15 fighter jets from the United States. This $6.2 billion contract aims to enhance Qatar’s defense capabilities and strengthen military cooperation between the two countries.
Controversy Over Gifted Boeing 747
Amid these agreements, controversy has arisen over Qatar’s offer to donate a luxury Boeing 747-8 to President Trump for use as Air Force One. Critics have raised ethical and security concerns, noting that the U.S. Constitution prohibits officials from accepting gifts from foreign governments without Congressional approval. The adaptation of the aircraft for presidential use would also be costly and time-consuming, potentially exceeding $1 billion and requiring years of work.
Strategic Implications
These agreements underscore the deepening economic and strategic ties between the U.S. and Qatar. Qatar hosts the Al Udeid Air Base, a key U.S. military installation in the Middle East, highlighting the country’s strategic importance.
